Dita Angeles

Dita Angeles has a strong background in portraiture, where identity, perception and social presentation are key themes running through her work. Inspired by existential philosophies, with reference to 20th century aesthetics, her paintings depict social issues and personal moments which incorporate the spectacle of contemporary media and culture. In recent years Dita has been pushing these themes towards high concept, anonymous portraiture such as The Post-Mod Wallflowersseries: a convoluted examination of social ideology and capitalist outcomes.

Meanwhile, Dita continues to maintain her traditional portrait skills for good measure and is currently a finalist in the 2024 Adam Portraiture Award for her piece It's Love, featuring Kiwi punk legend Chris Knox.

Born and raised in Auckland, Dita completed her BFA at Whitecliffe College in 2004 before immersing herself in Asia for fifteen years, then Australia, and finally returning to New Zealand in 2023 where she presently uses a small garage for a studio.

Dita’s works can be found in various private collections in Hong Kong, South Korea, France, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, French Polynesia and New Zealand including in the Arts House Trust collection in Auckland.

In July 2024 Dita was selected by the Judges as one of two only HIGHLY COMMENDED Regional Artists for the STUFF Gold Award during the Auckland Art Show at the amazing Viaduct Event Centre – for her contemporary anonymous portraiture work ‘Post-Mod Wallflower’.
