Frances Malcolm
‘Captivated by the beauty I find in nature, I feel compelled to paint; so that what I see can be enjoyed by others.’
Australian born artist, Frances Malcolm lives in the beautiful Banks Peninsula with her husband and three children. Frances moved to New Zealand permanently in 2006, after spending a gap year traveling and falling in love with the country, culture and lifestyle.
Frances graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in 2010, and went on to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Secondary). As a qualified art teacher, Frances taught part-time in multiple local Christchurch schools, whilst also raising a young family. Frances has worked with a range of public and private students, however has dedicated the last few years to focus primarily on the development of her own art practice.
Frances’ unique style has been gradually developed over time, through her own depiction of New Zealand’s predominantly native flora. Her macro imagery is displayed in vivid oils across large scale canvas or board, and exudes a bold presence in the room. Frances says, “I see beauty in the detail.” Building her work in layers, abstracting and defining the delicate details of the subject onto the canvas. Frances enjoys creating areas of ambiguity and intrigue in her work.
