Christchurch: live art demonstrations!

It's that time of year again! Autumn has arrived and that means art for everyone is back at Te Pae. We always look forward to presenting our show in the heart of the Garden City, where we are very much at home, ready to inspire the Christchurch public with an unforgettable, art-filled weekend. If you don’t have plans then we hope you do now!

One of our main attractions this year is a co-ordinated artist demonstration. This will unfold on our first show day, April the 26th. From 4pm to 8pm a selection of artists will demonstrate their craft alongside our master of live art demos, David Hinchcliffe. Showgoers will experience a vibrant showcase of jewellery, painting, drawing and printmaking. This is a rare opportunity to learn something new from those who have spent years perfecting their techniques.

Leading the demonstrations as mentioned above is international artist, David Hinchcliffe. David has had a highly successful painting career spanning over 50 years. With more than 100 solo exhibitions including paintings, sculpture and photographs in locations around the world. His painting style has been described as “contemporary impressionism.” His subjects are principally streetscapes, landscapes and figurative work. David has a unique painting process which he shares at workshops around the world. He paints from dark to light, creating figures and forms by painting negative space. David believes anyone can paint if they have the right attitude and learn the ‘tricks’ of art.

“Painting is magic. All magic is more or less trickery and I firmly believe anyone can learn it. The key is attitude and persistence,” he says.

So no one misses out on learning David’s tricks of the trade, he will be demonstrating at our VIP event, opening night and throughout our show days. David will be joined on Saturday by the likes of Barbara Franklet, who has been a practicing artist for over twenty-five years. She works in several mediums but predominantly oil pastels and mixed media. Barbara's work ‘The Enchanted Forest’  was awarded the fourth Regional Finalist of the prestigious STUFF Art Aotearoa Gold Award for Art Excellence in October 2024 at the Queenstown Art Show.

Also taking part in our live artist demo is last year’s crowd favourite, The Space Cowboy. The Space Cowboy is a multifaceted artist, internationally renowned for both his visual artistry and his record-breaking stunts. Beyond the canvas, he invites audiences into immersive Augmented Reality experiences that challenge perceptions of reality. This fab trio will be amongst many other acclaimed artists demonstrating their talent this weekend. You will have to come along to meet the rest!
